Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!
Culture – We bleed One Human Family. I was inspired to write about this because of Samantha’s FB post last week. Thanks for your raw and heartfelt message, Samantha, it was awesome to read. Back around 2011 or 2012 (somebody correct me here) we began, as a group, to work on the company mission statement. We wanted to put our ideals on paper so, not only us but hundreds if not thousands of future team members knew what this company held dear to its heart. What we felt it was important to stand up for and what we would fight for. We knew that this company was never just about selling pizza. We knew even then that we were so many things before we were “just a pizza and booze company.” We are an experience company before we’re a pizza company. We’re a content company before we’re a pizza company and we’re a human rights company before we’re a pizza company too. “All are welcome to experience our shops,” “we will be loyal partners to our communities” and “a fierce defender of what’s right” are three pillars of our mission. Those words are truer today than they’ve ever been. Some businesses have had to explain themselves lately because of poor decisions they’ve made. Some businesses have had to hide behind closed and boarded up doors. Some businesses have had to back-peddle from shitty and insensitive statements and have paid dearly for it. Not us. We’ve been bleeding ONE HUMAN FAMILY for almost 10 years now; almost our entire existence. We do it every day. Being on the right side of things is nothing new to us…it IS us. It’s who we’ve been, it’s who will always be and it’s what we fight for every shift.
Leadership – Why I hate hand-written signs and so should you. One of my biggest pet peeves is walking into a shop and seeing hand-written signs telling our customers we’re out of something. A hand-written sign may seem like an easy way to inform our guests that something has run out and may seems harmless, but I see it differently. There’s a coffee shop in the Short North that I’ll use as a quick example. Plastered to every inch of their front door are dozens of (mostly) hand-written signs saying things like; “NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS,” “NO SOLICITING” and “NO CHANGE GIVEN.” Before you even walk in the door, you’re met with the most negative and ugly experience the owner (or manager) could possibly provide. The exact opposite of welcoming. It’s amateur AF. What does this first impression say about what’s to come once you enter the place? Sometimes we need to make signs, I get it. What I ask that you utilize is the amazing graphics and design team that is at your disposal. Usually we can turn around a request for a sign in the same day and the result is clean, professional and welcoming. We put a ton of effort and expense into our branding and graphic design team and they do great work. Simply put, we’re better than a hand-written sign.
History – Pride. This last week would have been Pride week in Columbus, one of my favorite weeks of the year. Not because of the drunken parties or awesome parade floats, but because of what PRIDE means to our company and all of the people in it. We’ve been participating in the parade and vending the following party for 10 years now. In fact, this would have been our 10 year anniversary. Pride for us is just another way we live out our mission of being ONE HUMAN FAMILY. It’s our reason to celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends, family and co-workers. Not appreciate, because we do that all year long, but CELEBRATE. Happy Pride week everyone!
Motivation – “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right and evil doesn’t become good, just because it’s accepted by a majority” – Anonymous
The 5th Thing (something I’m reading, watching or inspired by) – If you haven’t seen Dave Chappelle’s 8:46 please take a few minutes to watch it. It’s raw, honest and funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tR6mKcBbT4&t=349s
Baby Update – As weird as it sounds, I think we’re ready for another kid. Perhaps not like right now, but definitely soon. See, we both got started with this “having kids” thing about 5 years later than some would call ideal. Plus, seeing as I’m turning 40 here in a few months, I don’t want the baby phase of our lives to stretch on too long. One of the best parts of having kids is watching your parents love them too. Grandparents are an amazing thing and I want to make sure they have every second possible with these little humans. Wandering thoughts are over. Kids are cool. Thanks for reading this far.❤️
