Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!
Culture – Becoming Invaluable. A few weeks ago, I wrote about our “culture of learning” and why we value it so much. In a small business environment like our, we rely heavily on every single one of you to knock it out of the park every day, every time. We rely on your initiativeand your ambition to get the daily deeds done and lead your tribes to greatness. But there’s another thing we look for in you leaders and that’s your ability and willingness to learn and grow. The two types of people we NEED in our organization are; 1. Those who can thrive in systems that are already established and, 2. Those who are able and willing to CREATE those systems. The reality is, we can’t wave a magic wand and simply solve a problem or create a system. Those things take people that are willing to become INVALUABLE by learning as much as they can about every aspect of the operation so they can TEACH IT TO OTHERS. You become invaluable by learning the job of the personabove you AND below you. You become invaluable by having your hands in as many “jars” as possible. You become invaluable by knowing so much about us that life without you would be impossible. You become invaluable by knowing what we’re going to need before we even know we need it. My favorite thing about this job and this line of work is the ability for every one of us to create our own destiny. This whole thing can be yours, from the next job above you to the entire company. When you have a mindset of continual and voracious learning, nothing can stop you.
Leadership – Be a behavioralist, not a numbers person. I would argue that the “numbers” part of being a leader is the easier part. It’s pretty objective. It’s pretty “black and white.” It’s pretty easy to know if you succeeded or you didn’t. The technical side is the one that also easiest to teach. When you are first starting out on your journey as a leader, learning the “numbers” is imperative because it’s the most basic ways to judge performance. You hit it, or you didn’t. The more complicated and arguably more impactful side of your role as a leader is learning the behavior of your organization. Not simply the behaviors of the people within it, but the behaviors of the entire organization you lead. Becoming a master of your domain is takes a lot more than just “hitting your numbers”. It takes deliberate and intentional focus and observation to learn the disposition of an entire system. When you master this, you achieve FLOW! Flow is the magic that accompanies mastery and it’s achievable by becoming a behavioralist to your organization.
History – The Sauces. There are a couple things that I think we nailed right off the rip back when we first started our little pizza experiment. The Sauces were one of those things. Jason and I were always big dippers (I’ll hold for shitty jokes…) and we loved condiments! Chicken nuggets, egg rolls, pizza, you name it and we were likely to dip it in something. So when we opened LNS and were looking for something to differentiate ourselves from the other pizza joints, dipping sauces were a no-brainer. Now, I’ll also give credit where credit’s due. Papa Johns and their little cups of garlic sauce certainly cracked the wall for us to come crashing through, but I think the sauces we offer is one of the reasons we’ve been successful. It allows people to customize their experience. We’re taking something ubiquitous (pizza) and allowing people to top it and taste it like never before. Ranch and Garlic sauce are the low-hanging fruit. The basics. The Unicorn Sauce and Hawt Mess are for the more adventurous. Whatever your preference, getting to dip you slice in a tangy sauce WORKS and we’ll never stop offering it.
Motivation – “The goal is not to become successful, the goal is to be valuable. Once you’re valuable, instead of chasing success, it will attract itself to you.” – Anonymous
What I’m Reading or Watching – Baby shit. Tons of baby shit. I’m fully prepared for sextuplets at this point.
Baby Update – William is at 37 weeks tomorrow. Rachael is too. Recently, we were talking about allowing him having chicken nuggets or not. This is what your life becomes, people.
