5 Things to Consider This Week…7/15/19

Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!

Culture – ABL. Always Be Learning. One of the main unspoken pillars of our culture here at LNS and OF is dedication to constant learning. We know that change is progress and progress is growth and the foundation for change, progress, and growth is learning. The “system” trains you to think that education ends after high school or college, but in reality, especially present day reality, continuing education MUST become a lifelong endeavor. Most people will have around 10 or more jobs by the time they’re 40, and we’re VERY aware that, in the grand scheme of things, our time together is limited. Knowing this, we’ve made it a priority to be an environment that you can constantly learn from. We promise that you’ll be better when you leave than when you started. So learn from us. We want to learn from you. Let’s TOGETHER use this precious and amazing, albeit limited time we have together to become better as a team. Then when it’s time for you to move on, we want to help you get to that next adventure in your life, knowing you helped us on our journey. Our goal is not to have a long list of people that used to work for us, but a long list of loyal alumni that reflect back on their time with us fondly and would recommend ustheir friends and family. An organization that they constantly learned from and are better because of.

Leadership – Touch it once. This is a concept I started practicing about year ago. Sometimes I do really great with it and sometimes I totally suck at it. Touch it Once basically states that as soon as something appears that you need to take care of, like say, an email you need to respond to, don’t read it and decide to “get to it later”. TOUCH IT ONCE. Open an email? Send a reply right then and there. That way it’s done and you don’t have to worry about it. Touch it Once can pertain to almost everything in your life. Hard conversations? Homework? Laundry on the floor? Phone call? Whatever it is, don’t put it off. Take care of it the first time you touch it. You can waste so much phycological time and energy on all the stuff you’re going to “handle later” that you end up with the huge backlog of “to do’s” and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Touch it Once trains you to be more efficient by making you adjust to taking care of things on the spot. Want to send me a nice note about how much you enjoy these emails every Monday morning? Don’t put it off! Touch it once!

History – The Shack. History of The Shack – The Original Late Night Slice – Part 3 – The Later Years – Years 4 – 7 Abridged. One could say we hit our first stride in these middle years. At the time were operating The Shack, Clintonville, Woodlands Tavern and the Trucks. It was a nice little business. The Shack was always home base though. It was rough, but loveable. As I’m thinking back, the best thing about the shack is how small it was and how much it taught us all about work flow. Any of the OG’s that worked in the original Shack remember what it was like working the register. You had about 6 square feet of space to; take orders, take money, remove pies from the oven (before they’d fall out of the conveyor and crash in a pitiful hot mess), cut pizzas, load the stone oven, get drinks, keep the movies playing all while dealing with a line of rowdy drunks. It was such a grind, but such a blast when you got into your flow. I can say with a certain amount of humility that we’ve been chasing that flow ever since. Towards the end of the Shack’s useful life, we realized it was not only a danger to sell food out of, but a danger to even BE in. The writing was on the quickly deteriorating walls, the Shack had to go.

Motivation – “Don’t be a know-it-all. Be a learn-it-all.”  -Satya Nadella

What I’m Reading or Watching – CBS Sunday Morning. At the risk of sounding like a 75 year old who’s getting ready for the 3pm early bird dinner special at the MCL Cafeteria, I’ve really been enjoying this news magazine show lately. If you’re a fan of 60 Minutes or 20/20, it follows the same format. And just like 60 Minutes, it’s good every time. Good stories and sad stories, happy and uplifting stories. It’s always a pleasant mix topical news from around our country.

Baby Update – Week 29. 11 weeks to go. Little William is about 2.5lbs and is about the size of a butternut squash! Yum! He is currently angry at me for not taking him to Cedar Point last Tuesday.

Thanks for reading! Like or hate any part of this? Let me know! I really value your feedback.

Have a great week!
