Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!
Culture – We all eat the same dirt. This is a military term that means everyone, regardless of rank, shares the same experience, the same sacrifice and the same effort. We’re a team that works hard together, plays hard together, eats shit together and wins together. Because we sacrifice so much together, we require a high degree of trust to function properly and nothing fosters that trust like full transparency and getting our hands just as dirty as anyone else. We, as a leadership team, will never ask someone to do something that we wouldn’t do ourselves. Now, that’s not saying there isn’t rank. You have to have ranks for stability. Picture a ship sailing away to find riches in the new world. You have a Capitan, First Mate, etc., but the Capitan arrives in the new world at the same time as the last man. They arrive together or not at all. Making pizza is beneath NO ONE in this company. Doing dishes, taking out trash, cleaning up puke or tiding up a dirty bathroom are all examples. We survive together, so we can arrive together. We all eat the same dirt.
Leadership – What you postpone, you abandon. We all put things off. We all avoid difficult situations. We all procrastinate. It’s human. The fact that what you put off and push to the side often gets pushed to the back is something we should all be aware of. This brings up two distinct ways to approach situations. First, if a situation, project or problem is of priority, it should be dealt with quickly. My method of mentally preparing to dealing with something difficult is to count back from 5. 5..4..3..2..1 DO IT! Another way of looking at an issue, is “what you postpone, you SHOULD abandon. If you find yourself continually pushing back a problem, project or situation, are you on the right path anyway? Being aware of consistent procrastination should lead to the question, “is this the right path or approach?” Action takes courage. Inaction is the result of fear. Next time you’re faced with a difficult call or conversation or situation, just think, 5…4…3…2…1…GO!
History – The Shack. Man, where do I start!? This might be a mulit-parter. History of The Shack – The Original Late Night Slice – Part 1. So, back in the day, the original Shack, the building that used to stand in the parking lot where the shipping container currently is, was first used as an office for a used car lot (read: our patio) that operated back in the 70’s and 80’s. Back when I first conceived the idea for Late Night Slice, my idea was to sell pizza out of this shack. I rented it from my Landlord for $250 a month and I had to do all the work myself. Not ALL by myself, I had help from friends, but the painting, demolition of walls, plumbing, electrical and alterations we’re all done by hand. By our hands. We didn’t know anything about pizza and even less about running a business, but what we had was confidence. Confidence that whatever problem or situation arose, we’d be smart or savvy enough to overcome it. I look back really fondly at those early days. It was such a grind and we were so naïve, but 10 years later our little experiment has carved out quite a nitch for itself. From the OG’s that have stuck with us through thick and thin to the newest Piesan, I say thank you. It’s been an awesome ride.
Motivation – “Your inward conflicts express themselves in outward disasters.” -Krishnamurti
What I’m Reading or Watching – We’re Pregnant! The First Time Dad’s Handbook. Rachael got this book for me, written by a father of two, and meant to appeal to the male part of a pregnancy. It’s a funny and practical guide meant to help us boys navigate not only our own feelings, but those of our partners. Like it or not, woke AF or not, women do the majority of the heavy lifting raising children. While Rachael has been devouring books on motherhood, pregnancy and child raising, I find myself taking more of an “organic” approach, as in, “I got this! I’ll be fine.” This book is reminding me I have some work to do too.
Baby Update – Week 27 – 13 weeks to go. Our little dude is the size of acorn squash and is currently karate-chopping his place out in my baby mama’s uterus. You’re welcome for that visual. 😊
Thanks for reading! Like or hate any part of this? Let me know! I really value your feedback.
Have a great week!
