5 Things to Consider This Week…10/14/19

Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!

Culture – Who Profits from This? This is a question I’ve been asking myself a lot lately. When we talk about making a change in one of our processes or systems, no matter if it’s a total overhaul or a simple adjustment, the question we must ask is, who has the most direct impact? Who is going to be the person or team who’s the greatest effected by this change and is the “juice worth the squeeze”. We have a culture of change. It’s written into our Misson, Vision and Values. Change is progress and progress is growth. Sometimes though, we don’t realize that what seems like a simple adjustment has far-reaching ripple effects down the stream. If when we ask ourselves this question and the answer is, “only one or a few of the effected parties profits from this decision,” then we should probably rethink the decision. When we hold our decisions up to this lens and find that everyone wins or PROFITS across the board, then we can be confident that we’re making a move that will be benefit everyone. A “win-win” as they say.

Leadership – Execute the Basics Brilliantly. Earlier this year when we debuted the Pep Rally Board, The Piearchy was the part I was probably most proud of. It basically spells out what you need to know to move up in the company. At the bottom of The Piearchy are The Non-negotiables and The Basics. As managers, the contents of these two categories should be totally automatic. I think the most important part of managing a successful shop is making sure your Piesans are executing the basics brilliantly, day-in and day-out without fail. They thrive on this consistency and your shop will open every day with the foundation it needs to be successful.

History – The Airstream Trailer. This was always an obsession of mine. To buy, remodel and serve pizza out of an old Airstream. If you’re not sure what an Airstream trailer looks like, check a picture of one here. I bought ours from an old-timer in Canton and restored it in our commissary back in 2013. We sold pizza out of it at the Park Street Patio for a couple summers before the owners sold the property and we had to move it. We ended up selling it for about what we paid for it and it became a fond part of LNS history.

Motivation – “Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”  -Jim Rohn

What I’m Reading or Watching – Mastery by George Leonard. Sometimes I’ll be reading a book and at the end the author will recommend a few books that changed his or her life. These are usually the books I don’t hesitate to buy and they almost always end up being awesome reads. Such is the case for Mastery. This is one of those rather short reads that dissects the topic of mastery and how our current society at best has lost value for it and at worst discourages it. The author argues your life’s endeavors will be a constant series of spikes and plateaus, and that to master anything, you must live for practicing, not for achieving results. Considering the ease at which you can digest the subject matter and the impact it can have on your life, this will easily be one of my top recommended books.

Baby Update – Will IV will be one month old this Wednesday. Hooray! We’ve kept a totally helpless human alive for 30 whole days! When people ask me, “how’s it been going,” which they do a lot lately. I’ve been saying that it’s been “a crazy couple of weeks,” but that’s kind of a lie. It’s an easy turn-of-phrase I default to to match their expectation, I guess. In reality it hasn’t really been “crazy” at all. Different? Sure. But really, I’ve been practicing for this for years, just in different forms. I’ve raised friendships, businesses, a marriage, a cat, a dog. Although a child may be my biggest challenge yet and whether or not I knew it the day he arrived, I was ready. Send me in, Coach.

Thanks for reading! Like or hate any part of this? Let me know! I really value your feedback.

Have a great week!
