Good Morning, Friends! Here are 5 things I’m up to this week…
What I’m working on – This week is sort of a light one for me. I’m between two short trips which only leaves me about 3 full work days. That means, like all of you should be doing, I’m taking advantage of, in my opinion, one of our best perks here at LNS; unlimited Paid Time Off. Everyone reading this has this perk. The funny thing is though, many of us don’t use it. Sorry, I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning. About 3 years ago, as Bryce and I were redesigning the company benefits package, we noticed a couple forward-thinking organizations we’re offering the incentive of unlimited PTO. Our first reaction was “that’s crazy!”, of course. We naturally feared that no one would ever actually work! But after talking to some owners that had success in offering this incentive, we decided that to be a forward-thinking company, we needed forward thinking benefits and we went with it. This took a huge leap of faith for us. Honestly, it was scary as hell. The thought behind unlimited PTO is basically this, we trust you to do your job and to manage your time effectively. Hold up your end of the bargain and we won’t need restrictions like mandatory 9pm to 5pm office hours, 2 weeks paid vacation, 30 minute lunches, etc. We’re adults here doing adult shit. When you’re done with work for the day, go home. When you’re needing a beach, get to one. When you’re sick, take the time to get better. When family needs your attention, be there for them. Just make sure your bases are covered with us and we’ll make sure everything is covered for you.
Something I’m pondering – Being an Instagram background. This blew my mind recently. So, Coachella, the music festival. You’ve heard the jokes about it, right? “What bands are you excited to see? Wait, there’s bands here?!” Basically this amazing music festival in Northern California has morphed over the years into a giant background for people wanting to show off on Instagram. As in, people are attending this festival not for the music, but to show off to their followers. “Look at me! I’m at Coachella! My life is amazing!” It’s sort of a weird time we’re living in. Everyone knows those people that post a picture of every meal. “Look at how amazing this meal is! My life is amazing!” It made me start to look at how our bars and restaurants might fit into this paradox. It took me a long time to internalize this and I came to the conclusion that perhaps we’ve been ahead of a curve here. Part of the experience of going to one of our shops is exactly that, the EXPERIENCE. If we’re going to bethe best place in the world to go get pizza, then we have to be amazing in every aspect around our pizza. Not just what’s on the walls, but how we talk, how we treat people and how we act toward each other. Every part of what we do has to INSTAGRAMABLE. Every part of what we do has to worth bragging about. “I’m at Late Night Slice! My life is amazing!”
What I’m reading – This week I set down Mistakes Were Made (but not by me). After digging in a couple chapters, I found myself being easily distracted, which means this isn’t the right time in my life for this book. I’ve had this happen over the years. Sometimes a book hits you at the right time and sometimes it dosen’t. It’s not saying anything about the quality of the book or its subject matter, it’s just not the right time for it. Luckily, I’ve got a couple backups on deck. Have you had a book that’s impacted you ever? Like, it hit you at the perfect time in your life. Please share it with me!
What I’m watching or listening to – I’m not a hockey fan (or sports fan for that matter), but I’ve really enjoyed watching the Blue Jackets lately. Not only does it feel great to see a hometown team winning, but it’s amazing to see how a community can come together to rally around a winning team. During a recent stroll down Neil Ave. the other day, I think I say 5 houses with Blue Jackets flags flying proudly. It just feels great to win. Home games also make us a little extra scratch and that’s a really good thing! GO JACKETS!
App or Technology I’m into lately – This certainly isn’t an app, but traveling as much as I have lately has certainly made me miss my pillow. I know, I know. I can almost feel your eyes rolling, but hear me out. Having a good pillow as really changed my life. Think about how much time your head spends on that thing! I use a brand called Bedgear. Do you have a mattress, comforter or pillow that has changed your life? Let me know about it!
Have a wonderful week, all!
