Good Morning, Friends! Here are 5 things I’m up to this week…
What I’m working on – Patios! Now that spring is upon us, I’m excited to get back to the part of my job that I absolutely love; creating and building spaces. Last Thursday, me and the projects team (read: Weisgarber) descended on Cincinnati and, after a week’s worth of planning, budgeting and approvals (remember last week?), we had the patio ready to go in about 3 hours and boy does it look great! Totally on-brand and inviting. Next we’ll be moving to the Short North for it’s Patio facelift.
Something I’m Pondering – The price increase. Today’s the day! If you’re reading this before 11am on Monday, there are a handful of us that are working on changing out the in-shop menus as we speak. This increase is a big deal for us and we didn’t take any part of it lightly. From the first idea of increasing prices to the execution that’s happening today, every detail has been meticulously thought through, argued over and ripped apart. I’m 100% confident we’re making a good decision. Perhaps if we could have done anything different, it would have been to do this sooner than three years. Will there be some pushback? Sure. Will we lose a Pizzaface or two? Probably. But, when it comes down to it, we have to keep moving forward. If we stop moving than we’ll never know what path we should be on. Action creates clarity, proactivity reveals strategy, and moving unveils the path. We have always had culture of action in our business. Action is change, change is progress and progress is growth.
What I’m reading or listening to – I love discovering a new podcast. Rachael sent me one last week that was truly brilliant. If you practice meditation (or have ever even heard of meditation), then you probably know about Dan Harris and his podcast 10% Happier. Episode #183 features Johann Hari. Johann is a Swiss-English writer and journalist. He’s written books on the war on drugs and depression and has a super-popular TED Talk out on the topic of addiction. He talked with Dan about the reasons why depression and anxiety are so prevalent in our modern society. Our screens, social media, lack of access to outdoor activities, and constantly being advertised to are all swirling around to create this crazy ego complex in us. One fascinating figure he brought up is, when the US spends a higher percentage of its GDP on advertising, depression and anxiety amongst high school kids rises congruently. Huh.
What I’m watching – This week I want to revisit an old movie that helped shaped me as goofball I am today. Swingers with Jon Faverau and Vince Vaughn. I’m going to be out in LA later this week to visit a friend and watching Swingers before I visit totally gets me excited to travel west. This movie came out when I was at the very impressionable age of 15 and is still one of the coolest movies to me. Like, it taught me what it was like to be cool. How to order drinks. How to talk. An entire new genre of music. Everything about Swingers was just COOL and it’s by far, one of my top 10 movies. I’ll probably post one picture to my IG when I’m out there and it will be from The Dresden.
An App or technology I’m into lately – One Bite app. I recently downloaded this app to check out the reviews our shops get. It’s genuinely a well-made and engaging app. It gives people (another god-damned) platform to share their opinions about pizza on. I’m happy to report we’re doing great on it. Of course we have our haters, but all-in-all pretty good. Btw, if you’re not following Dave Portnoy, aka Stoolpresidente on IG, you should. He’s by far the most popular pizza shop reviewer out there.
Have a wonderful week, all!
