What I’m working on – The price increase. First of all, sorry for a less-than-smooth roll out of the delivery portion of the price increase. No excuses, we just dropped the ball. As for the in-shop roll out, we’re going to take a much different approach. For me, this price increase is something we should earn. We should earn this in at least three ways; one, by having perfect execution. No one should walk up to a dirty table. No one should wait 20 minutes for a couple slices. No one should get brown or wilted lettuce. No one should have less-than-perfect customer service. Etc. Etc. Etc. For us to be able to charge $4.50, everything must be perfect. Second, we should be giving great value. Our slices are big, but not HUGE. By making the move to an 18” screen, our slice will be slightly bigger, ergo a better value. Plus “a bigger slice” is the best way to covey the message to the public. “why are you charging more?” “The slices are bigger.” “Oh.” Third, we need to have the buy-in of everyone in the company. This one is all about messaging and the messages are pretty easy to grasp. The prices of all of our products and services have risen over the three years since we’ve last raised prices and we want to continue to be an awesome company to work for by providing best-in-class perks and benefits. That’s it. More to come this week on the price increase.
Something I’m Pondering — Talking kids out of college! A couple weeks ago, I got a chance to talk to a group of high school business students about entrepreneurship. Well, the PLAN was for me to talk to them about entrepreneurship. Which I did, but I also brought up some things I wish someone would have told me when I was in their shoes. Things like, don’t go straight into college after high school if you don’t know exactly what you want to do yet and don’t take out 75k in student loans to figure it out! I told them to travel now while they have (practically) zero responsibilities. I told them not to get stuck or feel stuck, like don’t get pregnant or get someone pregnant. My message was basically, borrow from your retirement now and enjoy the next 10 years of your life. I could write an entire book on how I think college is a scam, but I’ll save that for a book! Here’s the thing, I’d never talk someone out of getting a higher education, but I absolutely talk someone out of using college to figure out what they want to do with their lives. Shit. Now I’m all fired up!
What I’m Reading or Listening to — I just started my seventh book in my “12 books in 12 months” challenge and this one is called Business for Punks and it’s about the story of BrewDog Brewery. It’s been a bit rocky to get through the authors first couple chapters, but now I’m actually picking up quite a bit. These guys definitely did things their own way and It’s pretty inspiring.
What I’m watching — Last night I scored a pair of tickets to see Justin Timberlake. Wow. This was my first time seeing him and what a performance! ( I feel like an old lady who just saw Bobby Darin! “What a performance!”) Especially for a Sunday show. “The closer you are, the better the show” is my general rule for live music and I definitely wanted to be closer last night.
An app or technology I’m into lately— My Talking Pet. This app was worth the $3 I spent 10 times over. It allows you to basically animate any picture and make it “talk”. It’s supposed to be for animals, but I use it on everything to send funny talking messages to people. If you haven’t seen one of my videos, ask next time you see me. It’s hilarious.
Have a wonderful week, all!
