5 Things to Consider This Week… 3/11/19

Good Morning Friends! Here are my 5 Things to Consider this week!

Culture – If you have a great culture it acts as an immune system against bad hires. I heard this quote from a podcast I listened to last week and I can’t stop thinking about how appropriate (and timely) it is. It reminds me of this time (read: many times) when I was in a very rural part of the country on a road trip or something and we stumble upon an old, dumpy hillbilly dive bar and decide to go in for a drink. The moment you walk in, you just know…you’re out of place. The people inside know. You know. The bartender wearing the yellow Tweety Bird sweatshirt knows. Everybody knows. Now, I’m not saying anything about the actual people inside. More than likely they’re fine people. We just don’t share the same culture…and that’s okay. The same has to be true for our shops. Our culture has to be so bold and apparent that it actually scares people off! From our initial recruitment, to the on-boarding to the training, our culture has to be so strong that people walk in the door and just know…I’m going to love it here or I’m out of place. Because when that person walks in the door, smiles and says, “for the first time in my life I’ve finally found a place I feel I belong and that gets me,” we know we found our person.

Leadership – Never waste a conversation. Good conversation can change the world. One sentence can change the direction of your life. Throughout your day, you’ll probably have dozens of conversations. Each one of these must be recognized as an opportunity for you to lead. The first step is the hardest; remembering that each conversation has the potential to change the life of someone…maybe yours. By asking leading questions, you can avoid small-talk and bullshit and cut to something important. I try to ask a variation of three questions; What are you trying to do? What’s not working? What do you want to do about it? Here’s a recent example of this line of questioning I had in-shop the other day. “Hey Piesan, how is lunch going today?” “its going okay.” “Is there anything that could have made it better?” “People are saying it takes too long to get their food.” “do you have any ideas on what would speed things up?” “Yes! If we rearrange and move…” This conversation could have been very surface level if I would have asked, “how’s lunch going?” and then got an answer and walked away, but I dug deeper and got some actionable items to think about. Try this out today!

History – One Human Family. This value traces its roots to way back before we adopted it, all the way down to Jason and I’s brief home of Key West, Florida. The islands motto reads, “All people are equal members of One Human Family”. This stuck with us then and it’s just as important to us now. This value says so much about us, not only as a company, but as individuals whom choose to abide by this rule too. Our Tribe is our Community and our community is our Tribe. Everyone will be treated with fairness and respect. We will celebrate the individual and take people who they are. Before we’re a pizza company. Before we’re a booze company. Before we’re anything, we’re a people company first. And we’ll best never forget that.

Motivation – “If you get there and the order I gave you doesn’t make sense, execute the order I should have given you.” -Stanley McChrystal

I love this quote because it sums up another one of my favorite military creeds; initiative in the absence of orders. Being able to think on your feet and having the trust and autonomy from your superiors to execute confidently. No one, especially in our company should ever fear making a decision in the absence of orders. Have you had to do this recently? Let me know!

What I’m Reading or Watching –  I love John Oliver. That’s it. The content is topical and important and the show is super well written. I celebrate it weekly.

Thanks for reading! Like or hate any part of this? Let me know! I really value your feedback.

Have a great week!
